From BBC News:

Dogs can be trained to sniff out bladder cancer, the first controlled experiments published claim.

There have been anecdotal reports of dogs spotting cancer in their owners, but now researchers say they have proved this phenomenon scientifically.

The scientists at Amersham Hospital, Buckinghamshire, ultimately hope to build a tool that is as good at discerning these smells as dogs’ noses.

Their findings appear in the British Medical Journal.

Auditions are now taking place to select the top ten “Charlotte Woofers” for the Frozen Woofys Winter marketing campaign. Frozen Woofys are an all natural, organic frozen treat for dogs made by LMD Products, LLC. Interested canines should upload a picture at http://www.frozenwoofys.com/Charlotte-Woofers

“We expect some stiff competition,” said Linda Myers Drei, President of LMD Products. “We’ve seen a lot of beautiful dogs in our travels around the Charlotte region and we anticipate a significant number of dogs in the audition.”

Drei noted that the rules for the auditions are very simple:

1. No humans in the uploaded photos.
2. One dog per picture (multiple dogs from the same household may be entered.)
3. No clothing or dog accessories permitted. (dog collars allowed)

“Frozen Woofys are all natural,” added Drei, “and so that’s what we are looking for as we search high and low for our Charlotte Woofers.” Dogs will be chosen on a neat and healthy appearance and their photo personality. All registrants must include their dog name, gender and breed as well as owner name and contact information.

Auditions run through September 12, 2008 and the selected Charlotte Woofers will be contacted during the week of September 15, 2008. All registrants must be available for a professional photo shoot on Saturday, September 27, 2008. The selected Charlotte Woofers will become a part of the Frozen Woofys Winter marketing campaign in the Charlotte Metro area.

Thanks to 1st Angel for posting about this contest!

Cool Pet Sites has a great article about being prepared to evacuate your home in an emergency with your dogs. Although the article itself focuses on cats, just substitute the word “dog” or “puppy” where ever you see “cat” or “kitten”.

Many thanks to Karen Crooke of Terrificats Cattery for allowing us to post this article and spread the word.

The New York City ASPCA helps city residents get their pets spayed and neutered via a traveling van that goes into neighborhoods so that people don’t have to go find a vet. They have no cost services for feral cats and dogs, and for dog owners that are on public assistance, and low cost for other residents. Their van schedule can be found here. If you know a pet owner that needs to have their cat or dog neutered or spayed, send them to that site to find the schedule for their area.

A microchip implant is an identifying integrated circuit placed under the skin of a dog, cat, or other animal. The chips are about the size of a large grain of rice and are based on a passive RFID technology. Microchipping dogs and other animals that are outdoors a lot is especially important and can help in ownership disputes if a dog gets lost.

Tattooing is another, older method for identifying animals. Tattoos can be difficult to find and won’t even be looked for on most pets. Once the fur grows back over the tatoo it isn’t easy to find.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

An RFID tag is an object that can be stuck on or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radiowaves. Some tags can be read from several meters away and beyond the line of sight of the reader.

Most RFID tags contain at least two parts. One is an integrated circuit for storing and processing information, modulating and demodulating a (RF) signal and can also be used for other specialized functions. The second is an antenna for receiving and transmitting the signal.
